Cryotherapy | Would You Freeze Yourself For Recovery?

Oct 28, 2017

As sport progresses, so do the recovery techniques used by athletes.

Odds are, when your muscles are sore you jump in the ice bath, pour some epsom salts in a warm tub, throw on your compression gear, stretch, foam roll, etc. The list goes on and on.

But, have you ever heard of cryotherapy?

The process of partial body cryotherapy (PBC) -- which you can see in the video above -- exposes your body (from the neck down) to subzero temperatures  (typically below -200 degrees Fahrenheit) for three minutes or so. It essentially a liquid nitrogen shower.

Athletes across multiple sports swear by its regenerative benefits and ability to help the body recover during hard training blocks or prior to competitions.

In the video above, Australian swimmer Bobby Hurley hops in the tank and gives it a go prior to the Australian Short Course (25m) National Championships in Adelaide.

What do you think? Are you willing to give it a go?
