It's not everyday a world record gets challenged, but don't tell that to Sarah Sjöström. The Swedish swimmer gave Australian Cate Campbell's world record of 52.06 in the 100m freestyle a scare Wednesday night at the 2017 Mare Nostrum in Barcelona with a sterling 52.28. Even more? Campbell was in this race -- touching second in 53.43.

Campbell broke the world record at the Australian Grand Prix on July 2, 2016 -- about a month out of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. In a disappointing follow-up, Campbell ended up placing sixth in the final at the Olympics with a 53.24. Simone Manuel (United States) and Penny Oleksiak (Canada) tied for gold in 52.70. Campbell was 52.78 and 52.71 in the heats and semifinals, respectively, in Rio but did not have the firepower in the final. Of note, Sjöström earned the bronze medal in this race with a 52.99.

Check out the comparative splits between Campbell's 2016 world record and Sjöström's time from Wednesday night below.
