Men's 100m Backstroke
To kick things off on Friday night's finals session at the 2017 Charlotte UltraSwim, Ryosuke Irie and Justin Ress battled to the finish in the men's 100m backstroke, posting the 3rd and 6th fastest times in the world this year with a 53.25 and 53.49, respectively. Ress blasted out to the lead, flipping first at the 50 meter mark in 26.08 to Irie's 26.27. But in the end, Irie's closing speed was too much for the rising NC State junior.

Times like that are standard for the Japanese veteran Irie, but Ress continues to get better and better. A year ago he was a lone wolf outside of the conversation completely, but now he is in the thick of things with the pack and will make a serious challenge for a spot on the 2017 World Championship team in three weeks at Nationals.
