The fifth and final day of the LEN European Short Course Championships kicked off Sunday morning in Copenhagen, Denmark. 

Sunday’s prelims comprised of the 50m and 400m freestyle and 200m breaststroke for women, and the 200m butterfly and 50m backstroke for men, where Kliment Kolesnikov will look to compete for a clean sweep of the backstroke events. 

The men’s and women’s 4x50m medley relays finished the session.

It doesn’t get any faster than the women’s 50m freestyle in Europe, with the past two Olympic champions and the current world champion lining up for this event. Heavy hitters Sarah Sjöström, Pernille Blume, and Ranomi Kromowidjojo were all able to clear 24 seconds this morning.

Kliment Kolesnikov continued his record-breaking ways, smashing his own world junior record in prelims. Firmly announcing himself in senior waters, Kolesnikov is looking to clean sweep the backstroke events in Copenhagen, but has short course world medalists Jeremy Stravius and Pavel Sankovich chasing him.

Spain had three women qualify in the top eight of prelims, but only Jessica Vall Montero and Marina Garcia Urzainqui will compete in finals due to the two-per-nation rule. They sit behind top seed Vitalina Simonova of Russia, but European record holder Rikke Moeller Pedersen is sure to be favorite in front of her home crowd, qualifying fifth in a comfortable 2:21.15.

Laszlo Cseh will compete in his first final this week, leading a Hungarian punch to this final alongside Olympic medalist Tamas Kenderesi, who was able to hold off countrymen Bence Biczo (1:53.67) and Mark Tekauer (1:53.75) who qualified in the top eight but will miss the final. Viktor Bromer has waited all week for his main event and qualified fourth with a 1:53.00 to win his heat, and junior stars Tomoe Hvas Zenimoto and Kregor Zirk also snuck into the final field.
