Jr. Nats West | Jack LeVant Clips Kibler's Time In Iowa, Drops 4:14 500
Results and highlights from day two finals at the 2017 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals West in Iowa City, Iowa.
After a quick relay session Wednesday, the first full day of competition kicked off at the 2017 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships West in Iowa City, Iowa, on Thursday night .
Events on the docket included the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 400 medley relay.
On the men's side, the race of the night was unquestionably the 500 free. Jack LeVant and Patrick Callan were in a dogfight the entire way, but LeVant pulled away over the final 100 yards to take the win in meet record time of 4:14.40 — clipping the record of 4:14.42 Drew Kibler set in Knoxville earlier in the night. Callan touched for second in 4:15.39. Speaking of Kibler, his future Texas teammate Daniel Krueger had a heck of a race in the 50 free, throwing down a 19.48.
On the women's side, the race of the night was the women's 200 IM with Vanessa Pearl taking the win in 1:55.67 — breaking the West meet record. Pearl won the race thanks to a monster 32.9 breaststroke split. She didn't run away with that one, though. Fellow breaststroker Zoe Bartel was on her tail the entire way, touching second in 1:56.23. Bartel would go on later in the session to split 58.95 on the breaststroke leg of Fort Collins Area Swim Team's record-breaking 400 medley relay.
