Just like he did in the semifinals on Thursday night, Russia's ​Anton Chupkov​ waited until the last 50 meters to strike. Sitting in fourth at the 150 mark, there was no doubt the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist would make a surge -- and surge he did. Chupkov blazed a monster 31.99 split on the last 50 -- 0.79 faster than anyone else in the field -- to claim gold in 2:06.96. That time is a new championship record and European record as well. Chupkov now holds the second-fastest performance of all time and became just the second man to break the 2:07 barrier. The first? World-record holder ​Ippei Watanabe​ who finished in third with a 2:07.47. Watanabe's Japanese teammate ​Yasuhiro Koseki​ claimed the silver in 2:07.29.
