Ferris State Gets 51-45 Double-Overtime Win Over Saginaw Valley State
Ferris State Gets 51-45 Double-Overtime Win Over Saginaw Valley State
Despite six turnovers, No. 1-ranked Ferris State is able to secure a 51-45 come-from-behind win against Saginaw Valley State in double overtime.

If there were any questions about why Ferris State is in the position its in – No. 1 in the rankings and eyeing a fourth NCAA Division II national championship in five years – the Bulldogs answered them Saturday in a 51-45 come-from-behind win over Saginaw Valley State in double overtime.
Ferris State had six turnovers in the contest and trailed 17-7 at halftime, but a 21-point third quarter gave the Bulldogs the opportunity to remain undefeated in 2025 and extend their winning streak to 24 games.
SVSU had an answer just about every time, however, until the second overtime, when the Cardinals got the ball first and failed to put any points on the board, ending the drive with a failed 38-yard field goal attempt from junior Teagen Lenderink.
Four plays later, junior Taariik Brett broke a tackle and rumbled into the end zone from 12 yards out to end the game.

Saturday’s contest was the 50th meeting between Ferris State and SVSU, with FSU now owning a 30-19-1 advantage in the series.
Prior to the showdown at Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium in University Center, Michigan, SVSU head coach Ryan Brady said creating turnovers would be the key to success against the top-ranked Bulldogs.
The Cardinals couldn’t have done much more, as they terrorized starting quarterback Wyatt Bower, who was 3 for 8 in the game with three interception and two lost fumbles in limited action.
Ferris State had six turnovers in all – four interceptions and two lost fumbles – after entering the game with two interceptions in nine previous contests this year.
Regardless, the Bulldogs were able to show their depth and versatility, with sophomore Chase Carter able to take over the quarterback role and deliver. He was 9 of 12 for 208 yards and four touchdowns, while adding another 67 yards on the ground.
Five Ferris State players scored in the contest – Brett and Cam Underwood had two touchdowns each, while Tae Boyd and Carson Gulker each had one. Kicker Eddie Jewett was 1 for 2 on field goal attempts and converted all six extra points.
FSU’s first play in overtime was a trick play, and it worked flawlessly. Carter pitched it to Brady Rose, who found Boyd in the end zone.
Saginaw Valley State answered with a seven-play drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Mason McKenzie, sending the game into the second overtime period.
SVSU got the ball first and was unable to score, allowing Ferris State to close it out.
McKenzie finished the game 17 of 30 for 178 yards and two touchdowns, along with one interception at the end of the third quarter – which Justin Payoute returned for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 28-24 advantage.
McKenzie, a redshirt sophomore, also led the SVSU ground attack, rolling up 85 yards and three touchdowns on 23 attempts.
Nick Patterson had a rushing touchdown for the Cardinals, while Zarek Zelinski and Terrence Brown Jr. made the team’s TD receptions.
Bigger Implications Than Just A Rivalry Game For Ferris State And SVSU
Three weeks ago, it looked like Saturday’s meeting between Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State was going to be one of the biggest games SVSU has played in over a dozen years.
The Cardinals had just defeated the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s other juggernaut, Grand Valley State, for the first time since 2012, and the question had to be asked – does this team have what it takes to complete the elusive double and dethrone Ferris State?
Well, the last time SVSU did beat both teams was that 2012 campaign.
With that question now answered, Saginaw Valley State falls to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play, ending any hope of this year’s GLIAC title, and likely an at-large bid to the Division II Playoffs.
The win for Ferris State was its 24th in a row, a streak that started in the second week of the 2024 season. The Bulldogs now are 10-0 overall in 2025 and 6-0 in GLIAC games.
With GVSU squeaking out an 18-15 win over Michigan Tech on Saturday, that means Ferris State has locked up a second consecutive GLIAC championship and the conference’s automatic bid to the playoffs.
Had Michigan Tech won, it would’ve set up the possibility for a tie atop the standings for the conference title, though FSU would’ve taken the automatic berth due to its 38-10 win over the Huskies in October.
MTU is 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference games, while GVSU improves to 6-3 and 4-2, respectively. Both now must hope for consideration for one of the at-large playoff spots in the new postseason format.
Michigan Tech was recognized in the polls this week, landing at No. 19 on the FloCollege D2 Football Rankings and receiving votes on the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll. GVSU was 24th in the first and No. 23 in the other.
Ferris State will close the regular season next week on the road at Davenport, and will be looking to reach 11 victories for the 12th time in program history. This is the 116th season of Bulldogs football.
Saginaw Valley State will travel to Michigan Tech to close out the 2025 regular season.

About Ferris State Football
We can keep this short and sweet. Ferris State is the hottest team in Division II football.
The Bulldogs are the reigning GLIAC and Division II national champions. They’re 9-0 overall this season, 5-0 in GLIAC play, ranked No. 1 across the major polls and enter Week 10 on a 23-game winning streak.
Ferris State has collected 10 consecutive wins over Saginaw Valley State, and a win against the Cardinals this week will help the Bulldogs to at least a share of the 2025 GLIAC title – their second in a row.
During the same time frame, Ferris State has compiled a 131-14 record overall, including five undefeated seasons.
The Bulldogs also have set the bar for Division II football with 10 consecutive trips to the playoffs.
This week’s meeting with SVSU will be the 50th consecutive year the two teams have faced off.
In 2025, Ferris State is one of six undefeated teams in Division II football and leads the nation in total offense with 531.1 yards per game and scoring offense (53.9 points per game).
The Bulldogs are coming off a 70-35 victory over Northern Michigan, which marked the fourth time this year FSU has scored more than 60 points.
Oh, and redshirt freshman quarterback Wyatt Bower is turning into an absolute beast for the Bulldogs. More below.

About Saginaw Valley State Football
In recent years, the Saginaw Valley State football team has been on the verge of a breakthrough season in the GLIAC, but one team continues to stand in the way.
It’s not Grand Valley State, which has earned at least a share of the GLIAC title 11 times since 2001, along with four national championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006).
It also isn’t Ferris State, which has won at least of share of the conference crown six times, plus three national titles in the last four years (2021, 2022, 2024).
SVSU’s biggest obstacle is SVSU, and it happened again last week when the Cardinals outshined Davenport in almost every offensive category, but the DU defense – or the Cardinals’ mistakes – proved to be the difference.
The Panthers had four sacks, three interceptions and a fumble recovery and kept the Cardinals out of the end zone in two of the four quarters. Davenport won the game 31-17, derailing SVSU’s perfect season in conference play.
Against a team of Ferris State’s caliber, mistakes simply can’t be made.
Since beating the Bulldogs three consecutive times from 2011-2013, the last of which was vacated due to NCAA violations (one of 20 football wins from 2013-2018), the Cardinals have lost 10 straight meetings, including a 27-24 nailbiter in 2024.
Three of the last four games between the two teams have been decided by one score, so the Cardinals have proven they can keep up, similar to their rivalry with GVSU, which went in SVSU’s favor this season, 20-19.
Saginaw Valley State, which first took to the gridiron in 1975, has enjoyed success over the years. It just has been limited over the last two decades.
The Cardinals are five-time GLIAC champions (1979, 1983, 1984, 2000, 2003) and have been to the Division II Playoffs seven times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011).
This season, SVSU is led by redshirt sophomore quarterback Mason McKenzie, who is third in the GLIAC in rushing with 817 yards this season and third with 90.8 rushing yards per game. He’s also tied for fourth with seven rushing touchdowns.
Through the air, McKenzie is first in the GLIAC in attempts (224), second in completions (133), second in passing yards per game (184.8) and tied for third in touchdown passes (12).
