USA Swimming national team director Frank Busch announced on Monday afternoon that Carol Capitani (University of Texas women's head coach) and Whitney Hite (Wisconsin head coach) have been named head coaches for the 2017 World University Games. The swimming portion of WUGS will take place from August 20-27 in Taipei City, Taiwan. The lone qualifying event will be the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships, which takes place June 27 to July 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Both Capitani and Hite have had tremendous success at their respective collegiate programs. Since making the move from the University of Georgia to Austin, Texas, in the spring of 2012, Capitani has led the Longhorns to five consecutive top 15 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a fifth-place result this year -- their highest finish under Capitani. Under her tutelage, superstar Madisyn Cox secured multiple top eight finishes at the NCAA Championships in the IM and breaststroke events and a spot on the 2016 Short Course World Championship team as well, where she came home with two bronze medals.

Hite has led the Badgers to success on both the men's and women's side, finishing consistently in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships since his arrival in Madison in 2011. The Wisconsin women finished 15th at the 2017 NCAA Championships, led by senior distance ace Danielle Valley, who finished seventh in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 1650 freestyle. The Badgers men had a strong showing at the NCAA Championships this year as well -- finishing 18th, led by star seniors Matt Hutchins, Brett Pinfold, and Cannon Clifton. Their highest individual finish came from Hutchins, who took home fifth place in the 1650.
