Some of the best international swimmers are converging in Rome next week not only to compete but also to support the efforts of four charities worldwide.

Energy for Swim takes place on August 8-9 at the spectacular Foro Italico swimming pool and includes performances both nights from world-class artists.

An event like this exhibits the true power of sport and shows how athletes can use their platform to incite social change in the world.

Who are the teams?

The four competing teams -- Energy Standard Team, Team Italy, Team USA, and Team Australia  -- will contend for the final victory after two nights of racing featuring a new competition format: athletes will accumulate points for their team rather than seek individual medals.

The teams are stacked with talent and name recognition, with swimmers such as Ryan Lochte, Nathan Adrian, and Leah Smith set to race.

At the end of the competition, the team that has accumulated the most points will be awarded the trophy. This style of competition is similar to an NCAA dual meet -- bringing the focus of the competition on the team rather than the individual.

What about the charity?

All charity organizations will receive essential financial support according to the final team rankings after the second session of the event on August 9.

Fan participation will also help the charity organizations in their fundraising activities, since a large part of ticket sales will be devoted to the organizations.

The charity foundations which will be supported are: Save the Children (Team Italy), Tabletochki (Energy Standard), Cure Brain Cancer (Team Australia), and Make a Splash (Team USA)
