Mark Schubert's career in the sport of swimming is coming full circle.
Schubert began his coaching career with the Mission Viejo Nadadores as a young 23 year-old in 1972. In October of 2016, it was announced that longtime Mission Viejo coach Bill Rose would be retiring and that Schubert would be Associate Head Coach with Rose for the 2017 season.
Between 1972 and present day, Schubert amassed a significant resume in the sport. On the club level, his Mission Viejo squads racked up an astonishing 44 national championships in his 13 years at the helm.
On the international level, he served in a coaching role for the U.S. Olympic Team in: 1980 (boycotted by the U.S.), 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. Schubert also was a staff member on the 2008 Olympic Team in Beijing.
Throughout the years, Schubert has coached legends such as: Janet Evans, Shirley Babashoff, Jill Sterkel, Brian Goodell, Lenny Krayzelburg, Jessica Hardy, Erik Vendt, Larsen Jensen, Ous Mellouli, Dara Torres, and many more.
His tenure has not come without turbulence, however. After a short year-long stint as USA Swimming's National Team head coach (June 2009 - November 2010), Schubert was placed on paid leave and then eventually terminated from his position due in large part to a deal gone bad and eventual lawsuit from former professional swimmer and high school prodigy, Dagny Knutson.
Schubert then made his way to Golden West Swim Club in California, where he ran into more legal trouble. Now, he approaches his swan song at the place where it all began: Mission Viejo.
FloSwimming caught up with Schubert at the 2017 Novaquatics Speedo Grand Challenge where he shared his team's preparations for the summer season.
