Sweden's Sarah Sjöström made up three crucial points on cluster leader Katinka Hosszu at the World Cup's fifth leg in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday by winning a trio of golds in the 200m free (1:52.00), 100m fly (55.55), and 50m free -- the latter a blistering 23.28.

Hosszu couldn't match her undefeated streak from last week in Hong Kong, taking two golds and a silver medal. Australia's Emily Seebohm was able to get the touch in the 50m back (26.29 to 26.30) before Hosszu dominated her preferred 200m distances with victories in the 200m IM (2.05.29) and 200m back (2.02.06) -- both ahead of Seebohm.

Chinese teenagers Wang Jianjiahe and Li Bingjie fought it out in the 800m free in a battle of the 2002 borns. Wang was able to finish stronger over the back half of the race, beating her more fancied rival to break the world junior record and claim the first World Cup victory of her career in a 8:15.35.

In the men's battle, World Cup leader and South African Chad Le Clos avenged last week's defeat to American Tom Shields, with a come-from-behind win to take the 200m fly.

Le Clos' time of 1:49.59 was just over a second outside his own world record. Shields led for 150m before getting touched out and recording another sub-1:50 outing of 1:49.86.

Le Clos also claimed victory in the 50m fly (22.45) ahead of China's Zhang Qibin (22.74) and the Shields (23.04).

After tying with Shields for points (75) at the last stop in Hong Kong, le Clos returned to the driver's seat in the World Cup standings to claim the second cluster and the USD $50,000 bonus.

Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa continued his undefeated streak this cluster in the sprint breaststroke distances, again claiming the 50m in a speedy 25.70, within half a second of the world record. World Cup newcomer Kirill Prigoda of Russia has been showcasing his speed and versatility of late, with a 25.85 to follow van der Burgh, before throwing the hammer down with a huge 2:01.24 in the 200m distance to win the event by over three seconds and come within striking distance of Marco Koch's 2016 world record of 2:00.44.

Prigoda's countryman Vlad Morozov stayed consistent winning his 100m free (46.87)/100m IM (51.38) double and also adding a bronze in the 100m back (51.13). The event was won by German Christian Diener in 51.00.

Other winners on night one include Alia Atkinson of Jamaica, who again took out the sprint breaststroke events -- this time over 100m (1:04.21) -- and Italian Olympic medalist Gabriele Detti, who claimed the 400m free (3:42.57) in a tight battle ahead of Poland's Wojciech Wojdak (3:42.98). Meanwhile, Azerbaijan got its first World Cup victory with Maksym Shemberev taking the 400m IM (4:06.72) to close the evening in Doha.

Thursday is the last session of racing in Cluster No. 2, where the points battle will be decided between Hosszu and Sjostrom, highlighted with the duo facing off against each other in the 100m IM.
