The first two preliminary sessions of the 2017 CIF Southern Section Swimming Championships got underway Wednesday morning with Division IV and were followed by Division III later in the afternoon.

While this was only preliminary action to set up the grand stage for finals, there was certainly still plenty of fast swimming across the board.

Division IV Prelims Highlights

LIVE RESULTS
Finals Begin: (Friday, 5 PM PDT)

Dominic Falcon Doubles Up
The sophomore mid-distance ace from Ocean View High School racked up a couple of top seeds in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Falcon handily controlled both races -- taking the 200 freestyle in 1:43.98 over second-place finisher Lachlan Wappet (1:46.77) and taking the 500 freestyle in 4:39.80 by a whopping 19 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Both of these swims were a touch slower than Falcon's seed times of 1:42.50 and 4:37.71, respectively, so look for him to solidify championships in both races Friday night. Falcon was also on Ocean View's top-seeded 200 medley relay squad (1:44.34), splitting a 24.20 on the butterfly leg.

Victoria Kirshner Dominates Sprint Freestyles
Another swimmer who picked up a couple of top seeds was Victoria Kirshner. The Santa Clarita senior dominated both the 50 and 100 freestyle events -- picking up the No.1 spot in the 50 (24.16) by nearly a full second. Kirshner will have a little more competition in the 100, but she still claimed the first seed out of prelims with a 52.92. Mia Bailey, senior for Alta Loma, is the second seed in 53.52.

James Torrez in Record-Breaking Striking Distance
The junior from La Salle flexed his butterfly and backstroke muscles on Wednesday morning in Riverside. Torrez claimed the top seeds in both the 100 butterfly (50.69) and 100 backstroke (50.54). While he will have to put up very impressive performances, Torrez is still in striking distance of Angel Alcala's 2015 records in both of these events -- 100 fly (49.47) and 100 back (49.58).

Division III Prelims Highlights

LIVE RESULTS
Finals Begin: (Thursday, 5 PM PDT)

Nate Biondi Cleans House in 50, 100 Freestyle
Nate, son of 11-time Olympic medalist Matt Biondi, showed that he has some chops of his own in the sprint freestyle events. Biondi, who is committed to swim for Dave Durden at Cal-Berkeley, went off Wednesday afternoon in the sprint freestyle events. To kick it off, he unloaded a 20.28 in the 50 -- over a full second ahead of the second-place finisher. He then followed up that performance with a 44.38 in the 100, good for the top seed by nearly two seconds. Will we see a 19 and 43 from Biondi on Thursday night? Stay tuned. Biondi has a long way to go before he breaks either of the DIII records in these races -- they are held by a guy named Vladimir Morozov. We heard he's pretty good at this swimming thing...

Walnut Ladies Take Down Meet Record
The first division record went down at the hands of the Walnut High School ladies in the 200 freestyle relay. Thanks to a strong 23.83 anchor split from senior Emily Honng, Walnut was able to throw down a 1:38.00, dipping below the old record of 1:38.17 held by Crean Lutheran. Walnut also took home the top seed in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.50) but will have a long way to go to catch Crean Lutheran's 2014 record of 3:21.41 which had superstars Ella Eastin and Lindsey Engel on it.

Stay tuned for more action from Riverside as the Division I prelims kick off on Thursday morning at 9 PDT.
