Lauren Case
and Remedy Rule of Texas were neck and neck the entire race at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, on Friday. They both have great underwaters, but when they turned even at the 75 it looked like Rule stayed under for too long because Case popped up and grabbed the lead. With only two-200ths of a second separating them, Case finished with a 52.03 and Rule finished with a 52.05. Their Longhorns teammate Brynne Wong rounded out the podium in third with a 53.89

1.) Lauren Case (Texas): 52.03

Men
Big 12 Meet Record: 44.62 (Joseph Schooling - Texas, 2016) 44.06 (Joseph Schooling - Texas, 2017)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 45.73
Invited in 2016: 46.44

Where did this come from? Joseph Schooling popped off a 44.06 tonight, the third-fastest performance of ALL TIME. He sits only behind his own 44.01 from NCAAs last year and Tom Shield's 43.84 from Winter Nats earlier this season. Schooling was 20.4 at the 50 and faded just a touch, but he said after the race that once he gets his legs back and fully tapers he is shooting for a 43.3 or 43.4. That is scary to think about. Jack Conger finished in second with a 44.56, the third-fastest time in the country this season. Conger and Schooling are both phenomenal swimmers, and it's a shame Conger's incredible swims get overshadowed by Schooling. Who knows? Maybe Conger will pop something off at NCAAs that will surprise us all.

1.) Joseph Schooling (Texas): 44.06 (BIG 12 MEET RECORD)
2.) Jack Conger (Texas): 44.56 (NCAA 'A')
3.) Brett Ringgold (Texas): 46.32
4.) Will Glass (Texas): 46.51
5.) Max Holter (Texas): 46.86
6.) Jack Frazier (WVU): 49.03
7.) John Smith (TCU): 49.05
**Garrett Hills (TCU) disqualified**

Women
Big 12 Meet Record: 4:04.67 (Madisyn Cox - Texas, 2016) 4:01.15 (Madisyn Cox - Texas, 2017)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 4:05.36
Invited in 2016: 4:11.05

Madisyn Cox of Texas ran away with this race from the moment she dove in. The senior won by almost 25 yards, with the closest person finishing over 13 seconds behind her. Cox's time of 4:01.15 is good for a new Big 12 meet record and the third-fastest time in the country this season. Madisyn will look to use her experience to her advantage as she runs into the two-headed buzzsaw of Katie Ledecky and Ella Eastin of Stanford at NCAAs. Rounding out the podium in this race was Maggie D'Innocenzo of Texas in second with a 4:14.28 and Madison Straight of Kansas in third with a 4:17.81.

1.) Madisyn Cox (Texas): 4:01.15 (BIG 12 MEET RECORD)
2.) Maggie D'Innocenzo (Texas): 4:14.28
3.) Madison Straight (Kansas): 4:17.81
4.) Elise Forzley (TCU): 4:19.21
5.) Haley Ruegemer (Iowa St): 4:19.73

NCAA 'A' Automatic: 3:40.76
Invited in 2016: 3:45.61

Jonathan Roberts of Texas took off and never looked back. Roberts used his front-end speed to take the race out in a quick 1:44.3, over four seconds faster than anyone in the field. Will Licon made up a small margin on the breaststroke, but in the end Roberts' lead was too much and he took the win with a 3:40.26, the fifth-fastest time in the country this season. Licon, who looked pretty tired in this race, ended up finishing second with a 3:43.85. Sam Stewart rounded out the podium with a 3:44.49.

1.) Jonathan Roberts (Texas): 3:40.26 (BIG 12 MEET RECORD)

Invited in 2016: 1:45.84

Flipping at the 150, this race was a toss-up between Joanna Evans and Quinn Carrozza of Texas. However, Evans turned on the afterburners and flipped into another gear out-splitting Carrozza 26.8 to 27.9 over the final 50 yards to take the win with a 1:44.41. Carrozza settled for silver in 1:46.11, and Nora McCullagh snagged the bronze with a 1:47.11.

1.) Joanna Evans (Texas): 1:44.41
2.) Quinn Carrozza (Texas): 1:46.11
3.) Nora McCullagh (Texas): 1:47.11
4.) Jenny Nusbaum (Kansas): 1:47.26
5.) Sammie Schurig (Kansas): 1:48.96
6.) Anelise Diener (Texas): 1:49.27
7.) Keely Soellner (Iowa St): 1:49.36

Big 12 Meet Record: 1:32.66 (Dave Walters - Texas, 2008) 1:32.17 (Townley Haas - Texas, 2017)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 1:32.97
Invited in 2016: 1:34.67

Texas flexed its muscles tonight in a race the Longhorns have historically been very strong in: the 200 freestyle. Townley Haas took this one with a 1:32.17, good for a new Big 12 meet record and the third-fastest time in the country this season. However, the most impressive part of the race was the depth Texas showcased. Jeff Newkirk, Clark Smith, PJ Dunne, and Sam Kline in the B final all finished with 1:34s. It's scary to think that two of their best swimmers, Joseph Schooling and Jack Conger, didn't even swim this race. Eddie Reese sure does know how to coach 200 freestylers.

1.) Townley Haas (Texas): 1:32.17 (BIG 12 MEET RECORD)
2.) Jeff Newkirk (Texas): 1:34.02
3.) Clark Smith (Texas): 1:34.22
4.) PJ Dunne (Texas): 1:34.64
5.) Radu Duican (TCU): 1:37.96
6.) Drew Damich (WVU): 1:38.55
7.) Ryan Kelly (WVU): 1:38.62

100 BREASTSTROKE

Women

NCAA 'A' Automatic: 59.04
Invited in 2016: 1:00.66

Jordan Surhoff took this race out very aggressively and held on to take the win and claim the Big 12 title with a 1:00.89. Surhoff's teammate Olivia Anderson claimed the silver with a 1:01.66, and Haley Downey of Kansas rounded out the podium in third with a 1:02.09. Surhoff has been floating around that 1:00 range for some time and will be on the bubble to qualify for the NCAA Championships. There is still time, though, as she can potentially time trial the event on Sunday or qualify in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday.

1.) Jordan Surhoff (Texas): 1:00.89
2.) Olivia Anderson (Texas): 1:01.66
3.) Haley Downey (Kansas): 1:02.09
4.) Emma Harris (WVU): 1:02.26
5.) Devin Newton (TCU): 1:02.62
6.) Kasey Roberts (Iowa St): 1:02.71

Big 12 Meet Record: 52.50 (Brendan Hansen - Texas, 2004)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 51.93
Invited in 2016: 52.92

In arguably the most exciting race of the night, West Virginia's Jack Armstrong broke up the Texas stranglehold to take the win in the 100 breast. Armstrong looked incredibly focused behind the blocks and had a desire in his eyes to take this win for the Mountaineers. After winning with a 53.09, he passionately slapped the water and pointed to his teammates. It was evident this win meant a lot for him but even more so for his teammates and coaches. Casey Melzer of Texas finished second in 53.67, and Austin Temple finished third with a 53.97.

1.) Jake Armstrong (WVU): 53.09
2.) Casey Melzer (Texas): 53.67
3.) Austin Temple (Texas): 53.97
4.) Jakub Swierczynski (TCU): 54.75
5.) Migs Martin (TCU): 55.12
6.) Drew Riebel (WVU): 55.23
7.) Jonathan Drewes (TCU): 56.67
8.) John Remetta (TCU): 58.09

100 BACKSTROKE

Women
Big 12 Meet Record: 51.40 (Tasija Karosas - Texas, 2016)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 51.45
Invited in 2016: 52.93

Tasija Karosas and Claire Adams of Texas were dead even the entire race and flipped tied at the 75. However, Karosas popped up with 12 1/2 yards to go and increased her turnover significantly to overpower Adams and set a new Big 12 meet record with a 50.96. Adams touched second with a 51.19 and Kaitlin Harty, also of Texas, rounded out the podium with a 54.07.

1.) Tasija Karosas (Texas): 50.96 (BIG 12 MEET RECORD)
2.) Claire Adams (Texas): 51.19 (NCAA 'A')
3.) Kaitlin Harty (Texas): 54.07
4.) Yulduz Kuchkarova (Kansas): 54.35
5.) Madison Ibrahim (Texas): 54.54
5.) Amelie Currat (WVU): 54.54
7.) Harper Emswiler (Iowa St): 55.02
8.) Rebecca Baxley (Texas): 55.31

Men
Big 12 Meet Record: 45.41 (Andrew Marsh - West Virginia, 2016)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 45.37
Invited in 2016: 46.51

This one was all John Shebat of Texas. The sophomore was out in a blazing-fast 21.57, and although he may have faded a bit, he still finished with a strong swim of 45.72. In second was Shebat's teammate Josh Artmann with a 47.37, and in third was West Virginia's Merwane Elmerini in 47.70. Shebat told us after the race that he wasn't out fast enough in prelims and UT coach Eddie Reese wanted him to be out in under 22 seconds to the feet. Well, Shebat certainly did that, and if he can get some pop back from his legs with a full taper he will be dangerous come March.

1.) John Shebat (Texas): 45.72
2.) Josh Artmann (Texas): 47.37
3.) Merwane Elmerini (WVU): 47.70
4.) Luke Hene (WVU): 49.48
5.) Darian Nezami (TCU): 50.00
6.) Jake Powell (TCU): 50.28
7.) Christopher Hearl (TCU): 51.46
8.) Brendan Barry (TCU): 51.55

200 FREESTYLE RELAY

Women
Big 12 Meet Record: 1:28.12 (Texas, 2011) 1:28.04 (Texas, 2017)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 1:28.98
Invited in 2016: 1:29.80

The Texas show goes on. The Longhorns threw down a new Big 12 meet record thanks to a very consistent relay. All four girls had splits within one-10th of each other. Rebecca Millard (21.96), Claire Adams (21.98), Remedy Rule (22.06), and Anelise Diener (22.04) led Texas to a 1:28.04. If these women can sharpen their exchanges and reaction times (Adams was almost 0.4), they will be threatening for major points at NCAAs. Iowa State finished in second with a 1:30.85 and Kansas rounded out the podium with a 1:31.54.

1.) Texas: 1:28.04 (BIG 12 MEET RECORD)
2.) Iowa St: 1:30.85
3.) Kansas: 1:31.54
4.) West Virginia: 1:33.85
5.) TCU: 1:33.92

Men
Big 12 Meet Record: 1:16.89 (Texas, 2009)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 1:17.77
Invited in 2016: 1:18.46

In the final event of the night, Texas took the win in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:17.10, just shy of the Big 12 meet record from 2009. Taking a closer look at the numbers, all three guys after Tate Jackson on the leadoff had reaction times of 0.24 or slower. Not to mention, their two aces, Jack Conger and Joseph Schooling, were left off the relay. With the addition of those two guys and some detail work on relay exchanges, this is going to be a very strong relay for the Longhorns contending for an NCAA title. West Virginia took second with a 1:20.39 and TCU was disqualified.

1.) Texas: 1:17.10
2.) West Virginia: 1:20.39
**TCU Disqualified**
