SEC Prelims Day 5: Kentucky Ladies Flex Their Backstroke Muscles
Day five prelims at the 2017 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee are in the books. The races contested were the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, and 200 breaststroke. This morning did not have any real implications on the team championship, but it certainly did have implications on the team standings in the middle of the pack. The Kentucky women, who are currently vying for third, went off in the 200 backstroke taking three of the top four and four of the top eight. After a day off from individual events, Caeleb Dressel was back in action in the 100 freestyle taking the top seed with a 41.51. With one finals session left to go here at these championships, there is plenty of fast swimming left. Stay tuned.

200 BACKSTROKE

Women
SEC Meet Record: 1:48.34 (Gemma Spofforth - Florida, 2009)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 1:51.95
NCAA 'B' Consideration: 1:59.19

If this isn't primed to be the race of the meet, then I don't know what is. Kentucky, who is making a serious push to take third in the team competition, came out hot placing three in the top four and four total swimmers in the championship final. Freshman Asia Seidt took the top spot this morning with a 1:51.52, just barely holding off Lisa Bratton, last year's SEC Champion, touching in 1:51.68. The bigger story here is the battle between sisters. Defending NCAA Champion Danielle Galyer of Kentucky took the third seed over her little sister Ali Galyer 1:51.81 to 1:51.82. With the top four seeds separated by only three tenths of a second, you can guarantee this race will come down to the last 25 tonight.

Top 8 Finalists

1.) Asia Seidt (Kentucky): 1:51.52 (NCAA 'A')
2.) Lisa Bratton (Texas A&M): 1:51.68 (NCAA 'A')
3.) Danielle Galyer (Kentucky): 1:51.81 (NCAA 'A')
4.) Ali Galyer (Kentucky): 1:51.82 (NCAA 'A')
5.) Hannah Stevens (Mizzou): 1:53.55
6.) Meghan Small (Tennessee): 1:53.57
7.) Bridgette Alexander (Kentucky): 1:53.78
8.) Micah Bohon (Tennessee): 1:54.04
16th: 1:56.27
24th: 1:57.69

Men
SEC Meet Record: 1:38.29 (Ryan Lochte - Florida, 2005)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 1:39.87
NCAA 'B' Consideration: 1:46.39

Tonight's championship final will be a battle of seniors between the top three seeds out of prelims. Carter Griffin of Mizzou takes the top spot with a 1:40.68. Last night's 100 backstroke champion and new SEC record holder Connor Oslin touches in 1:40.94 for second place. Defending SEC champion Joe Patching of Auburn settles for third with a 1:41.04. Don't expect any of these guys to threaten Ryan Lochte's meet record of 1:38.29, but it will likely take a sub 1:40 effort to win this championship final.

Top 8 Finalists

1.) Carter Griffin (Mizzou): 1:40.68
2.) Connor Oslin (Alabama): 1:40.94
3.) Joe Patching (Auburn): 1:41.04
4.) Christopher Reid (Alabama): 1:41.49
5.) Petter Fredriksson (Auburn): 1:41.99
6.) Jay Litherland (Georgia): 1:42.07
7.) Joey Reilman (Tennessee): 1:42.09
8.) Brock Bonetti (Texas A&M): 1:42.29
16th: 1:43.80
24th: 1:44.63

100 FREESTYLE

Women
SEC Meet Record: 46.81 (Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace - Auburn, 2011)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 47.69
NCAA 'B' Consideration: 49.99

As expected, Georgia and Texas A&M dominated prelims of the women's 100 freestyle, led by Senior Olympian Olivia Smoliga of Georgia in 47.74. Smoliga is the defending NCAA Champion in this event, so she will certainly be the favorite tonight. Texas A&M's Beryl Gastaldello claimed second with a 48.07 and Georgia Freshman Veronica Burchill took the third seed with a 48.20. The wildcard tonight will be Chantal Van Landeghem. The Georgia Senior has been a household name in the sprint freestyle events for the Bulldogs with a couple of SEC titles to her name in the 50.

Top 8 Finalists

1.) Olivia Smoliga (Georgia): 47.74
2.) Beryl Gastaldello (Texas A&M): 48.07
3.) Veronica Burchill (Georgia): 48.20

24th: 49.81

Men
SEC Meet Record: 41.07 (Caeleb Dressel - Florida, 2016)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 42.25
NCAA 'B' Consideration: 44.29

Surprise, surprise, Caeleb Dressel of Florida is the top seed out of the preliminary heats with a 41.51. Dressel hopped out of the pool completely unfazed as if he just swam a casual warm-up. Don't expect the Junior to threaten his NCAA Record of 40.46 tonight, but his SEC Record of 41.07 has a serious chance of going down. Kyle Decoursey of Tennessee had a great swim to finish second with a 42.23, an NCAA Automatic qualifying time. Michael Chadwick of Missouri is the third seed with a 42.32. All eyes will be on Dressel in the middle of the pool tonight, but the battle for second is going to be tight with a lot of 42s in prelims this morning.

Top 8 Finalists

1.) Caeleb Dressel (Florida): 41.51 (NCAA 'A')
2.) Kyle Decoursey (Tennessee): 42.23 (NCAA 'A')
3.) Michael Chadwick (Mizzou): 42.32
4.) Peter Holoda (Auburn): 42.45
5.) Laurent Bams (Alabama): 42.65
6.) Robert Howard (Alabama): 42.85
7.) Zach Apple (Auburn): 42.96
8.) Cory Bolleter (Texas A&M): 43.04
16th: 43.73
24th: 44.12

200 BREASTSTROKE

Women
SEC Meet Record: 2:05.19 (Breeja Larson - Texas A&M, 2014)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 2:07.33
NCAA 'B' Consideration: 2:15.99

The Aggies flexed their muscles this morning in prelims of the 200 breaststroke. Texas A&M took the top four spots and five of the top eight. There was no doubt at all they are going to win the team title, but this race just solidified their dominance. Sydney Pickrem, last year's silver medalist, took the top spot with a 2:07.93, followed by Ashley McGregor in 2:09.10 and Franko Jonker in 2:09.68. The wildcard tonight will be outside smoke from Bethany Galat, also of Texas A&M. Galat barely snuck into the championship final, but she is the defending SEC Champion so she will not go down without a fight.

Top 8 Finalists

1.) Sydney Pickrem (Texas A&M): 2:07.93
2.) Ashley McGregor (Texas A&M): 2:09.10
3.) Franko Jonker (Texas A&M): 2:09.68
4.) Esther Gonzalez Medina (Texas A&M): 2:09.99
5.) Kersten Dirrane (South Carolina): 2:10.46
6.) Meaghan Raab (Georgia): 2:10.54
7.) Emily Cameron (Georgia): 2:10.77

Men
SEC Meet Record: 1:51.58 (Nic Fink - Georgia, 2015)
NCAA 'A' Automatic: 1:52.99
NCAA 'B' Consideration: 1:59.79

It's going to be another battle between last year's top three. Nils Wich-Glasen of South Carolina, who was the 2016 bronze medalist, takes the top spot with a 1:53.61. Alabama's Anton McKee touches second with a 1:53.99 and James Guest of Georgia takes third with a 1:54.63. Don't count out Michael Duderstadt, though. The 2016 SEC champion and winner of last night's 100 breaststroke from Auburn will be a major contender tonight. Fabian Schwingenschloegl of Mizzou is the wildcard. Even though he isn't fully shaved and tapered, he was last years bronze medalist at NCAAs in this event with a 1:51.84 so you know he can compete.

Top 8 Finalists

1.) Nils Wich-Glasen (South Carolina): 1:53.61
2.) Anton McKee (Alabama): 1:53.99
