Cal's Durden, Stanford's Meehan Named Coaches For 2017 World Championships
Dave Durden and Greg Meehan have been selected by USA Swimming as head coaches for the men's and women's teams, respectively, at the 2017 World Championships this summer in Budapest, Hungary. Both of the appointments were announced earlier Thursday by USA Swimming national team director Frank Busch.

The 2017 World Championships take place in Budapest from July 23-30. The U.S. trials for the event are in Indianapolis at the famed IUPUI Natatorium from June 27 to July 1.

Durden, who is the head coach of the Cal men's swimming team, was an assistant coach for the 2016 U.S. Olympic team and had six of his current or former Cal men's swimmers representing Team USA in Rio (Nathan Adrian, Anthony Ervin, Ryan Murphy, Jacob Pebley, Josh Prenot, and Tom Shields), five of whom brought home at least one medal. Collegiately, Durden's Cal Bears have finished first or second at the NCAA Championships in each of the last seven seasons.

"Any time you're asked to be the head coach of a World Championships for USA Swimming it's a tremendous honor and responsibility," Durden said. "I'm really excited to reconnect and work again with Greg Meehan on the women's side, and hopefully between Greg and myself and the staff, we'll put together a good showing out in Hungary. I think we will have a mixture of veterans and newcomers to the team that will make USA Swimming proud."

Meehan, who is the Stanford women's head coach, was also an assistant coach for the 2016 U.S. Olympic team and had three of his Cardinal athletes on Team USA in Rio (Maya DiRado, Simone Manuel, and Lia Neal). The trio of Stanford swimmers raked in some serious hardware at the Games, totaling nine medals between the three of them. Collegiately, Meehan led the Cardinal to a runner-up finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Notably, he has now taken over the reigns from Bruce Gemmell and has started coaching superstar Katie Ledecky, who is currently a freshman at Stanford.

"I am humbled and honored to receive the appointment of Team USA's women's head coach for the World Championship team," Meehan said. "I appreciate the trust shown in me by national team director Frank Busch and the leadership within USA Swimming. The post-Olympic year Worlds team is a wonderful blend of Olympic veterans and athletes making their first appearance on the world stage. I'm looking forward to working with these great athletes this summer as we lay the groundwork for Tokyo 2020."
