USA Swimming announces new youth program, honoring top young swimmers
USA Swimming is reaching out to its young, up-and-coming stars.

The organization announced a program honoring the top high-school age and younger swimmers in the country last week. It will be called the 18 & Under World 100 and will feature the 50 boys and 50 girls who rank highest among swimmers worldwide .

Not only will the youth swimmers get a certificate and the honor of being on the prestigious list, there is also a practical benefit to being in the program. All 18 $ Under World 100 members will be cap exempt for the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series, meaning they are automatically eligible for the races.

The first class was revealed last week and it includes high-profile names like Becca Mann, Cassidy Bayer, Maxime Rooney and Michael Andrew. The full list can be found online here .

The selection criteria is detailed at USASwimming.org.

The members of the 18 & Under World 100 are potential future Olympians. The program is clearly a step toward championing the grassroots aspect of the sport in an effort to keep the U.S. near the top of the world rankings in swimming.

The United States won 33 medals in swimming in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of those, 16 were goals. Those numbers made swimming the country’s most successful sport in Rio, just above track & field, which took home 32 medals.

The next closest country in medals in swimming to the United States was Australia with just 10. The 18 & Under World 100 should only help fortify the U.S. as the world power in the sport.
