The Charlotte UltraSwim used to be a prominent stop on USA Swimming's Grand Prix circuit and then turned into a stop on the arena Pro Swim Series as well until 2017.

Back in 2009, a man by the name of Michael Phelps used UltraSwim as the first meet on his "comeback tour" following an epic eight-for-eight gold medal performance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and subsequent suspension for getting caught smoking marijuana out of a bong.

There were a lot of questions on the minds of swim fans: how will Phelps perform? What kind of shape is he in? What events will he swim? In typical Phelps fashion, he blew expectations out of the water (pun intended) in his first race: the 200m freestyle.

Phelps unloaded a blistering fast 1:46.02 -- a new UltraSwim meet record and emphatic message to the world of "I'm back." Not to mention, he was coming off minimal training post-Beijing due to vacations, public appearances, and a whole lot of scrutiny.

Phelps used this meet as a launching point toward breaking two still-standing world records at the 2009 World Championships in Rome -- the 100 butterfly (49.82) and 200 butterfly (1:51.51).

Many swimming stars, particularly from the southeast, will also look to use this meet as a launching point heading into the 2017 USA Swimming National Championships and hopefully into this summer's FINA World Championships.

Will we see any performances on par with the G.O.A.T's? Stay tuned to find out.
