Pac-12 Day Four Prelim: Cal Makes Strong Statement, Four Men Look To Repeat

200 BACKSTROKE

Pac-12 Conference Record: 1:35.73 (Ryan Murphy - Cal, 2016)
Pac-12 Championship Record: 1:38.44 (Ryan Murphy - Cal, 2015)
NCAA 'A' cut: 1:39.87

USC's Patrick Mulcare is the reigning 200 back champion, with his 1:39.64 from last year, however that two-peat will likely be stiff-armed by the massive wingspan of Cal's Ryan Murphy, who did not compete in this meet last year for the Bears. Murphy is the current record holder from 2015, but given his unshaved 44 last night, it seems that he will be taking aim at his meet record of 1:38.44. Keep your eyes peeled for a great swim from ASU's Richard Bohus, who led off a 44.9 last night on the medley relay. He's on fire.

This looks to be a bit of a wash in terms of points, with 2 up for Cal and Stanford. USC only has one up, but Jonathan Knox is 9th, and hopefully can maintain that position for Trojan points.

1) Patrick Mulcare (USC): 1:39.44 (24.2 / 25.2 / 24.7 / 25.2)
2) Ryan Murphy (Cal): 1:39.83 (23.7 / 25.4 / 25.6 / 25.1 )
3) Patrick Conaton (Stanford): 1:41.24
4) Richard Bohus (ASU): 1:41.35
5) Justin McArthur (Utah): 1:41.86
6) Abrahm DeVine (Stanford): 1:41.72
7) Thane Maudslien (Arizona): 1:42.11
8) Andy Song (Cal): 1:42.84

100 FREESTYLE

Pac-12 Conference Record: 40.76 (Vlad Morozov - USC, 2013)
Pac-12 Championship Record: 41.38 (Vlad Morozov - USC, 2013)

NCAA 'A' cut: 42.25

Another swimmer who is trying to make it a two-peat tonight, is Stanford's Sam Perry, who was last year's Pac-12 champ with a 42.72. Surprisingly enough, there were only 2 swimmers last year at Pac-12's to go 42. This morning there were 5. ASU's Cameron Craig is gunning for another title to accompany his 200 free championship. Especially having anchored last night's relay in 41.1. Look out. Dylan Carter looks to be another threat tonight after his 1:31 last night in the 200 free, as well as Santo Condorelli, who was 41.8 on the Trojan's medley relay last night.

But wait!  There's more!

Michael Jensen, who qualified 8th, was 41.56 anchoring the championship-winning relay that held off Cameron Craig and the Scorching Sun Devils. Also of note: 50 champion, Pawel Sendyk qualified 10th. Look for a 42 out of him tonight. Stanford was only able to put 1 person up in the 100 free even though he is top seed. Cal meanwhile has 2 up, but also own the 9th, 10th, and 11th positions. USC Also has 2 up but 2 down.

1) Sam Perry (Stanford): 42.24
2) Cameron Craig (ASU): 42.39
3) Justin Lynch (Cal): 42.55
4) Santo Condorelli (USC): 42.78
5) Dylan Carter (USC): 42.83
6) Jorge Iga (Arizona): 43.08
7) Tadas Duskinas (ASU): 43.18
8) Michael Jensen (Cal): 43.22

200 BREASTSTROKE

Conference Record: 1:48.66 (Kevin Cordes - Arizona, 2014)
Championship Record: 1:51.80 (Kevin Cordes - Arizona, 2014)
NCAA 'A' cut: 1:52.99

Steven Stumph made quite the statement this morning, only a second away from the meet record. He won this event last year with a 1:54.01, so guess what? We're 3 for 3 so far in swimmers gunning for back-to-back championships in their respectable events. Stanford's Matt Anderson was 2nd last year with a 1:54.77, but he will have to go faster than that to 2-peat a 2nd place finish tonight.

Also of note: USC's Carsten Vissering, Arizona's Blair Bish, and Cal's Conner Hoppe, went 1-2-3 in last night's 100 breast. However, in this morning's 200, they were 16th, 18th, and 11th. Oops.

Cal looks to gain some major points here, putting 4 aces in the A-final, compared with Stanford's solo act. USC meanwhile, has the top two spots, and to make any dent, will need to keep those two spots AS IS tonight.

1) Steven Stumph (USC): 1:52.82
2) Ridge Altman (USC): 1:54.63
3) Christian Lorenz (ASU): 1:54.88
4) Hunter Cobleigh (Cal): 1:55.68
5) Matt Whittle (Cal): 1:55.72
6) Carson Sand (Cal): 1:55.77
7) Matt Anderson (Stanford): 1:55.84
8) Nick Silverthorn (Cal): 1:55.93

200 BUTTERFLY

Conference Record: 1:39.65 (Tom Shields - Cal, 2013)
Championship Record: 1:40.31 (Tom Shields - Cal, 2011)
NCAA 'A' cut: 1:41.86

Arizona's Justin Wright has been one of the few bright spots in Zona's performance so far this week. However, that is to be somewhat expected due to the fact that many of the Arizona Wildcats tried to get their NCAA cuts at the Texas Invite in December, and will save the majority of their resting for NCAA's. His 1:41.9 was just off his time of 1:41.7 from last year's meet where he was out-touched by Cal's Andrew Seliskar. Seliskar is seeded second and will be gunning for back-to-back titles. (4/4). Look out for Matt Josa who does tend to excel more in the 100, so it will be interesting to see what effect Cal training has had on his 200.

Just like the 200 breast, Cal has four missiles locked into the A-final tonight for big points against Stanford. Stanford meanwhile only has two.

USC failed to put anyone in the top 8, so they will most likely remain in 3rd.

1) Justin Wright (Arizona): 1:41.91
2) Andrew Seliskar (Cal): 1:42.39
3) Matt Josa (Cal): 1:42.40
4) Michael Thomas (Cal): 1:42.71
5) Jimmy Yoder (Stanford): 1:42.92
6) Patrick Park (ASU): 1:43.56
7) Jack Xie (Cal): 1:43.56
8) Tom Kremer (Stanford): 1:43.96
