Pac-12 Day Two Finals: Grant Shoults' 4:10 500 Free Leads Stanford Charge
Day two finals of the 2017 Men's Pac-12 Swimming Championships in Federal Way, Washington, showed us that Cal has some big guns, but it's depth that may win the conference title. Stanford took the lead on Friday night in points with 387, while USC sits in second with 305. Cal trails in third place with 292 points. Saturday's session, however, could really turn things around.

500 FREESTYLE

Pac-12 Conference Record: 4:08.92 (Jean Basson - Arizona, 2009)
Pac-12 Championship Record: 4:11.25 (Cristian Quintero - USC, 2015) 4:10.67 (Grant Shoults - Stanford, 2017)
NCAA 'A' Cut: 4:13.22
2016 Invited: 4:17.73

Stanford came only two-tenths away from sweeping the top three in the 500 free. Grant Shoults broke Christian Quintero's meet record with a sizzling 4:10.67. An epic battle for second place came down to the wire, in which freshman Cardinal True Sweetser (4:14.11), defending Pac-12 champion Reed Malone (4:14.52), and Liam Egan (4:14.71) all tried to get their hands on the wall first. Egan had the fastest final 50 of the three, coming home in a blistering 24.57, but it was not enough to catch Sweetser or Malone.

1.) Grant Shoults (Stanford): 4:10.67 (PAC-12 MEET RECORD)
2.) True Sweetser (Stanford): 4:14.11
3.) Reed Malone (USC): 4:14.52
4.) Liam Egan (Stanford): 4:14.71
5.) Ryan Kao (Cal): 4:17.00
6.) James Murphy (Stanford): 4:18.13
7.) Benjamin Olszewski (ASU): 4:19.80
8.) Rahiti De Vos (Utah): 4:22.59

200 IM

Pac-12 Conference Record: 1:39.38 (David Nolan - Stanford, 2015)
Pac-12 Championship Record: 1:40.07 (David Nolan - Stanford, 2015)
NCAA 'A' Cut: 1:42.15
2016 Invited: 1:44.41

Andrew Seliskar took home the 200 IM with a strong breaststroke split (29.45) to pull ahead of Cal teammate Ryan Murphy. Surprisingly, Seliskar was actually ahead of Murphy after the 100 mark 46.92 to 47.01. This is Seliskar's second conference championship in the event, having gone 1:43.26 to win it last year. However, Murphy is certainly not fully rested for this meet, so he probably has some tricks up his sleeve that we'll have to wait until NCAAs to see. Abraham Devine of Stanford took third with a 1:42.59, a second faster than his time from last year's meet.

1.) Andrew Seliskar (Cal): 1:41.24 (NCAA 'A')
2.) Ryan Murphy (Cal): 1:42.40
3.) Abrahm Devine (Stanford): 1:42.59
4.) Cameron Craig (ASU): 1:42.75
5.) Tom Kremer (Stanford): 1:43.21
6.) Michael Thomas (Cal): 1:43.31
7.) Steven Stumph (USC): 1:45.05
8.) Max Williamson (Stanford): 1:45.28

50 FREESTYLE

Pac-12 Conference Record: 18.63 (Vladimir Morozov - USC, 2013)
Pac-12 Championship Record: 18.80 (Brad Tandy - Arizona, 2014)
NCAA 'A' Cut: 19.09
2016 Invited: 19.53

Standout Cal freshman from Poland Pawel Sendyk came in as the top seed and maintained, winning the 50 with a 19.17. For a freshman to come in and win the 50 is pretty impressive, and we will look for Sendyk to make a huge impact for Cal's already dominant relays. Sam Perry from Stanford touched second (19.30), and another freshman Cal sprinter, Michael Jensen, followed not far behind (19.36), tying with Cal's Justin Lynch.

1.) Pawel Sendyk (Cal): 19.17
2.) Sam Perry (Stanford): 19.30
3.) Michael Jensen (Cal): 19.36
4.) Justin Lynch (Cal): 19.36
5.) Santo Condorelli (USC): 19.37
6.) Dylan Carter (USC): 19.40
7.) Andrew Porter (ASU): 19.45
8.) JP Beach (Arizona): 19.67

200 FREESTYLE RELAY

Conference Record: 1:15.13 (California, 2009)
Championship Record: 1:15.54 (Stanford, 2009)
NCAA 'A' Cut: 1:17.77
2016 Invited: 1:18.46

There was a strong assumption that Cal would run away with this one given how easily its victories were in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relays on day one, also putting three Bears in the top four in the 50. Well, Cal didn't disappoint. Pawel Sendyk (19.29) led off in first place, and Michael Jensen kept the advantage (18.99). Justin Lynch (19.11) and Ryan Murphy (19.07) brought things home for the Bears.

However, three teams went tooth and nail, fighting for second place in a great battle. Stanford (1:17.11), ASU (1:17.20), and USC (1:17.24) all came down to the wire. Stanford's Tom Kremer anchored the Cardinal to second place in 19.13. Also of note, the ONLY 18 split we saw was from ASU's Richard Bohus. Not one other? We will see how things play out in three weeks in Indianapolis at NCAAs.

1.) California: 1:16.46 (NCAA 'A')
2.) Stanford: 1:17.11 (NCAA 'A')
3.) ASU: 1:17.20 (NCAA 'A')
4.) USC: 1:17.24 (NCAA 'A')
5.) Arizona: 1:17.81
Utah: *disqualified*
