ACC Day Two Finals: Wolfpack 6 For 6 So Far, Take Lead In Team Race
That's a wrap for day two of the 2017 Men's ACC Championships in Atlanta. The North Carolina State Wolfpack have yet to lose an event at this meet, sweeping all three relays and all three individual events. The highlights on Tuesday night included Anton Ipsen defending his ACC crown in the 500 free, Andreas Vazaios breaking the ACC record in the 200 IM and posting the fastest time in the country this season, and Ryan Held also breaking the conference record and posting the No. 2 time in the country in the 50 free, only behind Florida phenom Caeleb Dressel. After the first day, N.C. State is already in the lead and is followed by Louisville, which we expected. Stay tuned for a loaded day on Wednesday, featuring the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 400 medley relay.

WHAT. A. RACE. Anton Ipsen of N.C. State and Henry Campbell of UNC battled head-to-head for the entire 500. At the 250, Ipsen flipped at 2:05.8 and Campbell flipped at 2:05.9. After that they were both splitting 25 mids and threw down an identical 24.57 over the last 50 yards. But in the end, it was Ipsen who touched first in 4:11.92, the fourth-fastest time in the country this season, and Campbell touching second in 4:12.11. Adam Linker of N.C. State grabbed third with a 4:13.93, picking up critical points for the Wolfpack.

Make that 2 for 2 for the Wolfpack. N.C. State's Andreas Vazaios annihilated the ACC record with a 1:41.25, besting the old mark by seven-10ths of a second and posting the fastest time in the country this season. Not too shabby, not too shabby at all. Last year's champion Brandon Fiala of Virginia Tech gave Vazaios all he could handle but in the end could not take over the lead and settled for second with a 1:42.09. Coming home in a blazing-fast 24.15 over the last 50 yards and closing hard on Fiala, was N.C. State's Soeren Dahl, who touched in 1:42.26.

RYAN HELD. The junior from N.C. State exploded off the block and flipped at the 25 in an unbelievably fast 8.9 seconds. Coming home in a 9.7, Held touched the wall in 18.68, a new ACC record and second-fastest time in the country this year. The fascinating thing about Held is that he utilizes very strong underwaters, going at least 12.5 off each wall. This is traditionally rare for sprinters but becoming much more common as they look to get under the massive chop coming off the wall. Justin Plaschka of Notre Dame grabbed the silver in 19.38, and Chad Mylin snagged the bronze with a 19.39. N.C. State made it 3 for 3 and is looking to run away with this meet on day one.

2.) Justin Plaschka (Notre Dame): 19.38

Six for six. N.C. State has yet to lose a single event at this meet, sweeping all three relays and all three individual events. Ryan Held got the Wolfpack out to an early lead, splitting 18.90, a touch slower than his 18.68 in the individual event and passed the torch to sophomore backstroke specialist Justin Ress, who split a monster 18.86. However, Florida State did not make it easy. Chad Mylin popped off an 18.66 on the second leg to keep the Seminoles in the race. But in the end, Held developed too much of a lead for N.C. State to be taken over. Notre Dame grabbed the bronze thanks to an 18.86 from Daniel Speers on the second leg.
