ACC Day One Finals: NC State Rocks Relays With #1 Times In Nation
The first night of competition at the 2017 Men's Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta did not disappoint on Monday. It might have been a short session with only two relays, but it was jam-packed with plenty of action. North Carolina State and Louisville put on a show in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay, with the Wolfpack taking the upper hand in both by setting new ACC meet records and posting the fastest times in the country this season. Stay tuned on Tuesday for the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay. Undoubtedly the race to focus on will be the 50 freestyle with N.C. State's Ryan Held. Can he throw down a time that will give the SEC's Caeleb Dressel a cause for concern?

200 MEDLEY RELAY

ACC Conference Record: 1:23.19 (NC State, 2016) 1:23.16 (NC State, 2017)
ACC Meet Record: 1:23.19 (NC State, 2016) 1:23.16 (NC State, 2017)
NCAA 'A' Cut: 1:25.05
2016 Invited: 1:25.76

WHAT A RACE! NC State and Louisville were the clear front-runners for the majority of the race. Louisville took the lead by seven tenths of a second at the 150 behind a MASSIVE 19.91 butterfly split from Josh Quallen. Enter Ryan Held. The Olympic gold medalist, donning his best effort at a beard, rocked an 18.15 anchor to propel the Wolfpack to victory in a new conference and meet record time of 1:23.16. Louisville grabbed the silver with a 1:23.34, and Notre Dame busted the outside smoke taking third with a 1:24.88. NC State and Louisville now officially have the top two times in the country this season, eclipsing Florida's 1:23.44 from SECs.

NCAA 'A' Cut: 6:20.67

If the first two relays are any indication, this is going to be a four-day battle between NC State and Louisville. Thanks to splits from Andreas Vazaios (1:33.31), Held (1:32.76), Justin Ress (1:32.05), and Soeren Dahl (1:31.70), the Wolfpack absolutely obliterated their own ACC meet record from 2016 with a 6:09.82. This is also the fastest time in the country this season by over two seconds... NC State is flexing its muscles and firing a warning shot to the rest of the NCAA that the Wolfpack are a force to be reckoned with this postseason. Louisville grabbed second with a 6:12.30 thanks to a pair of 1:32s in the middle from seniors Trevor Carroll and Grigory Tarasevich. North Carolina rounded out the podium in third with a 6:19.20.
