American Record: 26.76 -- Kevin Cordes (USA), 2015
ADAM. PEATY. After winning the 100m breaststroke last night with a 57.47 -- the second fastest performance of all time -- Peaty could have easily cruised through prelims of the 50m breaststroke. The sprint breaststroke G.O.A.T. had other plans, however.
Peaty uncorked a 26.10 to win the ninth and final preliminary heat -- shattering his own world record by 0.32, a substantial margin in a 50. Prior to Peaty, the world record stood at a 26.67 from South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh.
We knew the British star had his speed game on point and was poised for a big swim as the first 50 of his 100 was 26.60 in the semifinals and 26.50 in the finals. Adam Peaty now owns the eight fastest performances of all time.*
We have seen how much Peaty has lowered the standard in the 100m (58.46 to 57.13) and now he is doing the same amount of damage in the 50m. Van der Burgh scratched the 100 this week to focus his efforts on the 50 -- which paid dividends as he dropped a lifetime best of 26.54 to take the No. 2 seed going into Tuesday night's semifinals.
Americans Kevin Cordes and Cody Miller sit in 4th and 15th with times of 26.83 and 27.31, respectively. Both will swim in Tuesday night's semifinals.
Does van der Burgh have enough to bridge the gap on Peaty? Will we see Peaty drop a 25-second 50m breaststroke? Will he wipe everyone else off the top 10 all time like he did in the 100?
*Tied at No. 8 with van der Burgh at 26.62.
