LIVE RESULTS

The 54th annual Sette Colli meet kicked off in Rome Friday with many world class swimmers putting on a show for the packed house at Foro Italico, home of the 1960 Olympic Games.

With just four weeks until the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, this meet is always a perfect fit on the calendar for those chasing race practice against stiff opposition.

Home crowd favorite Federica Pellegrini (ITA) highlighted the night with a come-from-behind win in the women’s 200m freestyle to pip Michelle Coleman (SWE) at the finish. In a three way battle also with Femke Heemskerk (NED), all three women were pushed to fast in-season times of 1:56.16, 1:56.49, and 1:56.51, respectively. This is still some way off the 1:54.55 Pellegrini put up at this meet last year on route to the Rio Olympics.

The men’s 400m freestyle Final was a stacked field led by Italy’s own Olympic Bronze medalist Gabrielle Detti lining up against two Olympic Champions from this event; Mack Horton (AUS) from Rio last year and Tae Hwan Park (KOR) from Beijing 2008. In a ding-dong battle, Park used his trademark finishing kick with a back 50m of 26.81 to power away in 3:44.54, ahead of Detti’s 3:45.88 and Horton’s 3:47.58.

Adam Peaty (GBR) continued his dominance in the men’s breaststroke events, crushing the meet record to again go sub 59, in a 58.72 winning time. Peaty was pushed along handily by 17 year old Nicolo Martinenghi (ITA) who broke his own Junior World Record and Italian National Record in front of his home crowd to finish second in 59.31. Giedrius Titenis also swam sub minute with a 59.69 season best.

Bruno Fratus (BRA) continued his undefeated run from last week’s Mare Nostrum Tour to win again here in Rome against tougher opposition. In a stacked field with World Record holder Cesar Cielo (BRA) in attendance, world No. 1 Ben Proud (GBR) and Aussie's Cam McEvoy and James Magnussen, this was always going to be a tight race. Fratus continues to fine tune his racing skills, power ahead in the last 10m to win in 21.86 ahead of Proud (21.95), McEvoy (21.96), Magnussen (21.98) and Cielo (22.20).
