These are the rules of swimming please read and consider before taking the next step in your swimming career. Part 1.

The Laws of Swimming Pt. I
These are the rules of the pools. Please print them out, tape them to your ceiling, and recite them (at a minimum) five times daily. Not really, but they are important for a successful swim team atmosphere.


Part One


  1. No swimmer instructed to leave 5 seconds behind another swimmer shall leave less than 5 seconds after the other swimmer leaves.
    • The penalties for breaking this law could result in:
      • The person in front of you being mad at you
      • Dirty looks
      • Much more

  2. If the swimmer behind you touches your feet. You have been caught. Please allow the swimmer behind you to go ahead of you.
    • The penalties for breaking this law could result in:
      • A multi-swimmer pileup accident
      • An angry coach
      • An angry teammate
      • An all-around bad time

  3. If you hear anything that sounds like thunder. Yell "THUNDER!!" as loud as you can. No exceptions.
    • The penalties for breaking this law could result in:
      • Angry teammates asking you why you were the only one who didn't yell "THUNDER!!"
      • Team-wide punishment for attempting to evade practice falsely

  4. No swimmer leading a lane told to leave at a specific time shall leave before that time to gain an advantage over fellow teammates.
    • The penalties for breaking this law could result in:
      • Getting "called out" for leaving early
      • Coach adding seconds to your time (if during a timed set) due to the early takeoff
      • Angry stares

  5. If the pool is cold when you jump in and a fellow teammate asks "Is it cold?"…do not say it is warm to deceive your teammate.
    • The penalties for breaking this law could result in:
      • Being splashed by a teammate
      • A lack of trust from other teammates
      • Retaliation
